Liquid Feeds Handling & Storage Guide

Following the guidelines for handling and storage is hugely important to the successful feeding of liquid feed for best animal performance. Specialist Nutrition is here to help you all the way.

Please carefully follow the step-by-step guide below. For expert advice from one of our technical team, call us today on +353 51 833071 or click to contact us.

  • Bulk Delivery: Typically arrives at 50-60C in 25-30t lots.
  • Unload Promptly – Transfer into storage tank immediately.
  • Make sure your tank is clean.
  • Make sure your pipework between your tank and the delivery truck is clean and free from any damage.
  • Tank Type: Typically, food-grade tanks with 4-inch pipework for easy pumping.
  • Location: Place tanks on level on a constructed plinth. Better if it the same height as your diet feeder so it can gravity feed into the feeder,
  • The tank should be sloped back to front to ease unloading and cleaning.
  • Ventilation: Tanks should be vented but protected from rain.
  • Shelf Life: Up to 2 months if stored cool and dry.
  • Tanks should be emptied and cleaned after each load.
  • Species Suitability: PAS is ideal for cattle/pigs but not for sheep.
  • Mixing – Can be mixed with silage or TMR (Total Mixed Ration) for improved intake.
  • Feeding Rate: Typically, 1–2 kg per head per day for adult cattle, depending on diet and performance goals. For pigs PAS can be included up to 10% of the diet.
  • Runoff Risk: Prevent syrup from entering drains or watercourses.
  • Organic Farms: Not approved for organic livestock systems.
  • Rodent Control: Keep storage areas clean and covered to avoid attracting pests.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Pot Ale Syrup / Spey Syrup

Pot Ale Syrup is a concentrated, palatable, high-protein liquid by-product of the whisky distillation process. It provides degradable protein, yeast to stimulate rumen microbes and is naturally high in copper.

Pot Ale Syrup and Spey Syrup are the same product, both referring to a distillery by-product used as a nutritious and highly palatable animal feed. The terms are interchangeable in the animal feed industry, describing a high-energy, protein-rich liquid derived from the whisky distillation process that helps stimulate forage intake and supports digestion in cattle and pigs.

Its highly palatable aroma and texture stimulate livestock to consume more feed, including silage and home-produced feeds, which can help reduce feed costs and improve overall diet efficiency.

Pot Ale / Spey Syrup is rich in degradable protein and fermentable energy, helping to balance energy sources in the diet. This supports higher milk yield, improved growth rates and better overall animal performance.

Containing yeast fragments and fermentable carbohydrates, it stimulates rumen microbial activity, improving the digestion of fibrous feeds and overall nutrient utilisation.

Its binding properties make livestock consume a more balanced ration, reducing the risk of diet sorting, acidosis and dust. This improves feed efficiency and creates a better working environment.

Pot Ale / Spey Syrup is free-flowing, ready to feed and easy to store and convey, requiring no additional processing.
